First entry

This is the initial launch post for Ruby Arena. Ruby Arena is a game in active development. The whole reason I decided to make this game was to teach myself Ruby. Yet I'm having soo much fun doing it, that I've continued to add more to it.

Currently in the initial beta release, you can only get through the first few levels of the Arena before you finish. All core systems and functions being done means its easy for me to continue adding more things like enemies to fight and spells to use. In the coming days, new builds will come out that make the game longer and more in depth. In its current state it can easily occupy you for 3 to 5 hours.

The objective behind the game is simple. Earn your way through the Arena, prove your worth. More and more continues to be added to it. There are three different races each with their own strengths and weaknesses:

  •      Humans:
  •        - well rounded
  •        - weak magic user (magic spells are 10% less effective)
  •       Dwarves:
  •        - no mp, cant use spells
  •        - higher attack and defense
  •        - lower speed
  •        - higher hp
  •        - weak to magic (take 10% more magic damage)
  •        - strong attacker (physical attacks are 10% more effective)
  •       Elves:
  •        - higher mp, lower hp
  •        - lower attack, lower defense
  •        - higher speed
  •        - resistant to magic (take 20% less magic damage)
  •        - weak attacker (physical attacks are 10% less effective)"

When you start, you wake up in town with no memory and begin your journey.

Other things in current development include formatting and further colorization of many screens in the game. The item and spell usage screens for example are not fully colorized yet. Most of the game is. The few spots that aren't will be done soon. I'm also working on additional control options to make controlling the character more intuitive. I am also working on adding in npcs, some that only show up once certain requirements are met. both for simple quests, and for teaching the player some of the nuances of the game.

I'm always open to ideas and should I use something that a person suggests, I'll give them a credit for it in the game credits. One thing I'm trying to add more of for example is the larger ascii text I've been using. Also considering adding some ascii graphics to the game.  I'm not sure how much this game will evolve but I'm having a lot of fun making and adding to it.
